Helping Canadians see the future
Data visualizations for the Future of Programming Distribution in Canada
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) is an administrative tribunal that regulates and supervises broadcasting and telecommunications in the public interest.
In 2018, the CRTC conducted consultations with Canadians about how they want to access audio and video content in the coming years, and how they think these changes might impact the Canadian broadcasting and telecommunications markets. Based on their findings, the CRTC produced an online (HTML5) report. To help make the report more engaging, CRTC wanted to produce several interactive visualizations. The CRTC enlisted MARSWorks to help plan, develop, and integrate these components.
Using the chart.js JavaScript library and custom SVG graphics, MARSWorks created several interactive data visualizations, including complex charts, graphs, and interactive flowcharts. The challenge here was to make these elements compliant with the Government of Canada accessibility standards (WCAG 2.0 AA), and responsive for various mobile and screen resolutions. Due to limitations on available server-side technology, our development team was forced to create an innovative process to pre-generate the possible outcomes allowing the application to be completely portable to any hosting environment.
